We needed to create quotes and estimates, manage our purchasing, schedule employees and contractors, generate computerized work orders, manage projects, control our stock and third party service expenses, do our invoicing and look after accounting and payroll; however there was nothing available that addressed all the needs of a busy contracting business.

The decision was made to create our own. There was some in-house expertise but we saw the need to bring in an “expert”. Off to Griffith University where we found their number 1 programming undergraduate, Vaughan McKillop, and hired him as soon as he’d finished his degree.

We gave Vaughan a brief and after three months, he had created a brilliant scheduler. It let the technicians easily access the work they had to do, and what’s more, it let me see exactly who was available, for what job, and when. It made an immediate difference to the business. We were now able to tell our customers exactly when a job would start and who would be doing it.

Excited by what we’d achieved, we took a closer look at what this new tool could be expanded to do.

Since then, we looked at every aspect of the business and worked out how it could be made easier. No stone was left unturned, no question left unanswered in the process.

The software we developed (we called it simPRO – Service Industry Manager Professional) now runs the whole business, including the accounts.

Other contractors we dealt with started to ask us about our increased efficiency, and when we explained about the software, they wanted it, too; and so we established a second Company, Acorn Software, to distribute it to the industry.

Since then, we have actively listened to the industry as it has told us via our forum, what they want this product to deliver them. What we now offer is the result of the collaboration between some 50 contractors.
